  1. My grandfather worked at Ashtabula Forge for almost 30 years, up until the time they closed about 1982 or so. He as far as I know he did all of the finishing on all of the forks, stems, and cranks for the vast majority of his time there. I remember him talking about not only oxide tanks, but phosphate tanks as well. Not sure if the phosphate was zinc or magnesium. As a child, I spent a little time on the plant floor walking around, when we would go pick him up from work. Just seems like I remember 55 gal drums marked "Black Oxide". Seems that he liked running the "oxide" tanks better than the phosphate tanks, as I remember. They also used nickel. I know this doesn't help clear up this mystery, but the only person who could have put this mystery to bed once and for all just passed away last month. This posting and another came up in Google, while I was trying to find some information on Ashtabula Forge myself. I felt compelled to reply with whatever information I could add. I just wish there was more to add.
