Mike, I'm in the same boat as you. I recently turned 39 as well. I do still have my 1999 GT Speed Series 24 (but with the updated frame from the recall), but I would like to try something different.
For my style, from what I remember, the chainstay length of the Kuwahara was too long. And like you, I wanted to do the same as my mountain bikes - build them part by part. And since I already have a few Intense mtbs (5.5, 6.6, UZZI VPX, and M3), I think a Podium would be a good fit to the stable. I'm just trying to find one that I could ride to see if I want a Pro or ProXL.
I didn't know that the Sabot frames are different than what comes on the complete bikes - they're all made in Taiwan, aren't they? How much cheaper in design could the complete bike version be?
The SE Team Bike looks nice, but I don't want 180 mm cranks - I'd prefer 175 mm, which is a good example why building the bike from scratch gets you what you want. No offense intended.
