  1. The decals are foil, and my frame is chrome. I can't seem to get enough of a peel going to even get the WD-40 tube underneath to spray. It seems like the decals have become really brittle, and the glue really hard, so I can only get small pieces off at a time even when I get it hot. I'll keep trying, and maybe I'll get a heat gun. I know I can get the residue off easily, but I have to get the decals off before I can do that.
  2. I've been running my wife's hairdryer for 35 minutes. My hands are burnt, my fingertips are sore from picking. The result: 1/3 of the head tube decal removed, 1/3 of one side of the frame decal removed. There MUST be a better way. Is there a solvent that I can use? I mean a solvent that will get the DECAL off, not just the residue left behind (but harmless to the chrome). Or maybe some other method? HELP!
  3. Dave- I have a set of NOS gold VDC bars if you're interested in changing your bars. I have a Powerlite f/f on the way, looking forward to building it up as a rider. I saw those Powerlites at the Roseville show. Very nice. Blickum- I still have your card, I'll send you an email about a decal set once the f/f arrives.
  4. I was lucky enough to be there yesterday, since I live in Sacramento. Unbelievable array of bikes. I am completely impressed with the work people put into the (or the luck/money involved in finding them!)! Does anyone know how to get a hold of a guy named Lyle? He was with the "Rick's" folks, I think. He was selling a crankset w/BB. I didnt have cash, but I still want to buy it. Shot in the dark, but can't hurt to ask. Thanks!
  5. I have put it together as I thought was logical, but when i turn the cranks it keeps locking down. I notice that both sides of the spindle where the bearing races sit are reverse-threaded. Should they both be reversed, or is this a defect? Anyway, I have the cups in, bearings in the cups, and on the left (non-drive) side I have the bearing race, the little notch-washer, and the lock nut. On the right (drive) side, I have just the bearing race. There is no notch washer or lock nut for that side. Is this all correct? Also, the bike co-op where I was working on it didn't have BB wrenches thin enough to hold the bearing race in place and get at the lock nut, so now the damn thing is locked tight. For the record, the volunteer did it, not me. Argh. Any help with this stuff? Thanks.
  6. My first OS build. Thanks to all the folks who gave me advice. It's nearly ready to ride. I posted this in "Restoring," but someone said I should post it here too. Hope you like. Not all top-of-the-line parts, but almost all NOS (other than the F/F and headset). Too bad it's almost too tall for me to ride!
  7. Here it is. I just need to adjust the BB, put on the blue chain, and get a longer cable and housing for the rear brake. Too excited to wait to post a pic. Sorry about the crappy photo- my camera sucks. Only problem, this bike is almost too tall for me and my wife (note the seat is at its lowest). May be looking to eventually trade for something like an MCS MagnaCruise, etc.
  8. I have a NOS Maxy Cross set for my Kos Kruiser build. I have never done this before, so I can use a little help. I have looked at the whole assembly, and have put it together. It basically makes sense, but I want to clarify a few details. a. So do I tap the bearing cups in with a rubber/wood mallet? b. Does the "slotted" end of the spindle go to the drive side, or the opposite? c. which side gets the lock nut? (I only have one) d. what is the purpose of the washer with the notch that fits the spindle slot? e. Any general advice, step-by-step instructions or diagram? Thanks -Kris
  9. Got the frame/fork yesterday. I am pleased with the condition. Only very minor surface rust on some welds. Slight 'hazing' of chrome through very light scratching. I removed the old decals (shot), shined the f/f with mothers, and now it is VERY presentable. I put on the new sticker kit, except for one sticker, which I have no idea where it goes: Small clear sticker w/ white lettering that says, "All tubes chro...". I knew where the same one with the black letters went, but this one is a mystery. Anyone? For the record, this bike is going to be a surprise gift to my wife. Quite a strategy, eh?
  10. I have 2 sets of NOS loose ball hubs. One set does not spin at all. The other set, both hubs turn but feel dry and gravelly. What should I do to fix these. I've never opened a hub before. If all it takes is opening, cleaning and re-greasing, I'm sure I can handle it. But what do I need to open them? What kind of grease do I use? White lithium? Thanks, Kris
  11. All great suggestions and tips. Thanks. I hope a good polishing will make it presentable. If not, I'll examine other options when I get there. Frame arrives on Thursday. After a credit card-melting round with ebay, I now have everything on the way except pedals, grips and wheels. I think I'll be close soon.
