  1. Thanks for the info Newguy. You're the one who did all the work to the trickstar -right? You got some skillz man. I've done a search but can't seem to find the evolution/history of skyway wheels. This is all I seem to know but not sure what years go with each. Anyone know where I can find suc hinformation? Tuff I Tuff II with metal flange Tuff II Graphites Tuff II with no flange ?? ??
  2. I bought these skyway off ebay. 3/8's axle, spin on freewheel hub, serial number 3202474 on rim in white and no magic marker writing on inside of rim (other than a skyway sticker saying where to return for warrantywith postage for $7.50). They say Skyway Tuff IIs on them, are not the metal flange type and are loose ball bearing hubs. Seller said they were from the 80's but I think they are more recent. Here is a pic from the auction. Not a bad deal for the price no matter what year but just curious of the vintage. They are going on my newly purchased mongoose replica.
  3. Based on Jon's photo's it appears my bars are standards. Interesting to note that the measure JMC used in their ads referred to the rise to the cross bar and not over all rise of the bars. Learn something everyday. Now if only some one could tell me why I have an "M" stamped on the inside of my drop out of my 82 Shadow. On the drive side, a slanted capital "M" is clearly visible and looks like it was applied pre-chroming.
  4. You guys know this stuff far beyond what I know. So here the measure I get 1) middle of the stem clamping area to the top of the cross bar = 6 inches 2) middle of stem clamping to theoretical center between bar ends= 8 inches 3) bar end to bar end= 22.5 inches If my bars are the 6 inch standard, then the measure they use for the rise must refer to the space from cross bar and clamping area. Sorry no time to get picts tonight but measured it twice. Will post later tomorrow.
  5. I think they are the 8 inch standard. Maybe they were cut since they are exactly 22.5 wide. These are definitely not just a 6 inch rise. Noty sure if this helps but I believe the cross bar is eleptical (like a Skyway TA down tube) and if they were cut, they did a very good job.
  6. Hmm- Since we're on the topic, I bought a set of JMC bars about amonth ago. Assumeed they were the "standard" becuase they were not that wide. I just measured them-22.5 wide but 8 inch rise. I measure rise from where bottom of bar would be clamped to theoritical midpoint between bar ends. They are definitely a solid 8 inch high rise if that's they way to do it. Maybe they are cut down from a DY or AP?
  7. Is there any issue with using skyway brake pads work on regular chrome rims? I assume they will streak but this bike won't get ridden that much. Thinking of using red - to match bike or gray (so streaking is minimal).
  8. The photo doesn't do it justice- in the real life you can clearly see an " M" stamp-it's tilted and in an awfully odd spot.It looks like it was original to the frame since it's chromed over. I was thinking maybe for "Melton" or maybe the drop out was going to be for a mini? I don't know- its just weird because it's a perfect "M" not something someone etched in there after they bought it. Anyone else got one?
  9. Thanks for the comments guys. My wife and friends just give me odd looks when I try to talk about building up a 24 yr old BMX bike. I raced at bit back in 82 and 83 and the fastest kids at the track at JMCs, so its pseudo dream bike from my youth. An added bonus is the interesting history you can get since Jim is willing to share serial number information and has records of when he produced diferent frames and different versions. Anyway, appreciate this site and the help from guys Jon Western for inspiration Drew (pandaproam) for help with some parts. Just a seat and brake lever away from completion. :32: Anyone got a Viscount aero or kashimax for sale at areasonable price? The dominator I picked up just doesn't seem appropriate for the build.
  10. Looking over a JMC Shadow frame I bought - serial # K82 251 and noticed on the inside of the rear drop out (same drop out that has the serial nmber- but on the inside not outside) there was a capital M stamped close to the front. Here is the picture -anyone know what it might be before I go bother Jim? Its a bit jard to see unless you click to expand the thumbnail but is pretty clear in real life.
  11. Thought I'd post the progress of getting the parts for my first build. Got the bug after seeing this site and then found a JMC bike that was built up as a mini on ebay. Figured it was a Shadow from the serial number and it was! Pictures were poor in the auction and counld't tell the condition of the bike and took a chance. Bike was in better shape than I expected and came with the very nice cranks, pedals and a mini tuff neck (since sold). Worst part on the frame is some washer marks on the rear drop out and scuffing on the top tube. A new sticker set is on the way from Jim Melton. I think I only need a decent seat and brake lever and I can put her together. SO far Frame: 82 JMC shadow- #k82 251 which makes it the 50th frame to use the year as part of the serial number. Jim Melton says it was sold to A& D bikes in August of 82. Anyone know where that shop is? Forks and Bars: JMC. Bars are an expert size Cranks: Sugino Super Maxy cross cranks in Chrome with sealed bearing BB and, DB turbolite chain ring Stem: DK, the older version with square corners like I had BITD Other: MX 1000 brake (needs refinishing, chrome is not good), Araya 7x rims with Suzue hubs, Suntour XC II pedals, and Ginny's hooked me up with KMC silver chain,CHeng shin comp IIIs and a red JMC pad set from Ginny's :40:
  12. Tried to pay dues via membership button but doesn't work for the standard site support button. What email address do I send my $ to?
  13. I guess I'd prefer the quicker steering of the shadow, was just thinking that a long frame would give me more room because I'm actually going to ride this sucker. My shadow is serial #K82 251 and acoording to Mr. Melton was sold in August of 82 to A&D bikes. It has the round bottom tube though -not the ellpitical. When it was sold to me it was set up as a mini with sew-up rims, mini proneck, mini powerlite bars and uni mini pro seat. All the stuff except the proneck is for sale if anyone wants them. jon Western got the pro-neck. Hopefully the fact that it was set up as a mini means it was ridden lightly- but that also makes me think this is a pretty small frame. I've nevfer seen one built uop in person but when I was about 13 a kid at the track who was really fast got one andI've wanted one ever since. I believe I have scored some JMC bars but we'll have to see if that comes through , This build is killing me. Wanted to go black and chrome and lo and behold- can't find black JMC pads anywhere. So now it will be red and chrome I guess
