~~ RETRO / Modern Replica / Custom Build BMX PROJECTS ~~

For the purposes of the BOTY, we'll define the era of eligibility for this class as 2000 to present, though concessions may be made for earlier bikes with fitting attributes, that make them more at home here. The guidelines for submission are to be found here: Rules & Guidelines 2014. The winner of the retro and new school category does not vie for the over all title which is open to the Old School classes only. It's a self contained honor for this class only.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA & INFORMATION ON THIS CATEGORY:
Bikes that would belong in this class are modern fabricated bikes that are modeled on old school bikes and have incorporated an old school aesthetic or were custom fabricated according to the entrant's imagination / customized vision. Bikes in this class include all bikes that did not actually exist historically. Examples of this would be bikes like the SE retro line, the Supercross made skunk works projects, certain Kappa or VRP (or other Sal made retro projects) or some of the bikes made by Knight, or the new retro GHP's or the Skyway TA retros, the CW/Revcore retros, the Hutch retros, Mongoose KOS cruisers, the recent Haro releases, EK Performers. All the True Torch retros, etc. etc.. Essentially any enterprise aspiring to sell something to the old school guys by releasing a bike inspired by old, original era designs and productions. Other examples of bikes belonging in this class would include heavily altered examples of actual old school frame sets that have been customized with frame or fork modifications into a pit bike, a cruiser or anything other than it's original wheel base size. If you have a bike like this, it must be entered into this Retro/Custom class. Please do not enter a custom fabricated frame in the era designated classes.

There are still other bikes like Fireman's Texas Cruzers that are not replicas of vintage bikes, but definitely have the old school vibe.  You can put those here too, though they might be considered modern new school in some cases. You decide based on your parts selection and the feel you were going for when putting it together.

Please follow the guidelines to the letter. Entries that break the rules will be deleted and you will have to re-submit. Also, take special note of the schedule for submission, cut off and voting.

2013 EF Proformer

#89 of 250

This is my 2013 EF (Eddie Fiola) Proformer. BMX legend and Hall of Famer Eddie Fiola manufactured only 250 of these Proformer frame sets and I am honored to own #89 of 250. What makes this "retro" ride different from any other is that Eddie Fiola actually had a hand in every aspect of the design and build process. He even helped bend the tubing. The frame sets were fabbed up at True Torch and then powdered at Olympic coatings (the same company that did the GT's of the 80's). I decided to build this ride up with rare Odyssey limited edition Vapor Blue "colorway" parts. Had a lot of fun building this bike… and it rides AWESOME!!! Thanks for all the help Eddie, you are the King!!!

Frame/Fork/Bars : EF Proformer in white (#89) 100% 4130 ChroMo
Stem : Sunday Freeze in Vapor Blue w/carbon fiber spacer
Headset : Odyssey in Vapor Blue
Seatpost : Primo (330mm) pivotal in satin black
Seat : Primo Kevlar in black
Seatpost Clamp : Sunday in Vapor Blue
Detangler : Odyssey GTX in black
Right Lever : Odyssey M2 in black
Left Lever : Odyssey MonoLever in black
Grips : Odyssey Aitken in black with Vapor Blue end caps
Rear cables : Odyssey Slic in Vapor Blue (custom made by me)
Front cable : Odyssey Slic in Vapor Blue (custom made by me)
Front and Rear Brake Calipers: Odyssey EVO II's in Vapor Blue
Brake Pads : Odyssey Slim by Four - Clear
Wheels : Skyway Tuff II's in black - 3/8 Front and 14mm rear with 9t driver
Tires : Whitewall Odyssey Hawke slicks
Sprocket : Sunday Sabertooth in Vaper Blue
Chain : KMC white & black
Cranks : Odyssey Thunderbolt in black (175mm) with Odyssey Euro BB

Mitsuboshi Comp 3 Reissue Tires (fat & skinny)

This build has a somewhat longwinded story. A friend of mine gave me the Oakley reissue grips for my birthday in 2010, which was right around the time when is was done with refinished / repop / retro parts and looking for original finish bikes and parts. Well, what to do with those grips? After a couple of months I remembered one day waking up this one dude selling this particular frame and fork set at the German veterans BMX cup in 2011. Got in touch with him and found out it was still available. The next step was forgetting all things I learned in the meantime and use all the things I wouldn't do anymore. Colored chainwheel bolts? Of course! Reissue / repop parts? For sure! Bullseye parts? Oh yes! (although the cranks are in my possession since the early 90s - none of the ”new” Bullseye stuff) Etc., etc. Also, I wanted to achieve an ”Andy Patterson” look to the bike, of course, kinda cheating but hey it's retro and I can do what the f*** I wanna do. When I bought the frame, I found out it got #43 serial number which made for even a better experience, as it is my lucky number (and for BMX in general if you weren't aware so far). The former owner powdered it white, original finish is gold ano, and also custom made the decals. This is the first bike I own I will probably never ride.
